Stephen Penn
Adjunct Vocal Coach
Stephen Penn recently returned to the Central Kentucky area after pursuing many educational and professional goals
throughout the United States and Europe.
Aside from vocal coaching, Mr. Penn is co-director of the UK Opera Workshop and music director for the Lexington Opera
Society/UK Opera Theatre joint educational touring opera. Recent engagements include rehearsal pianist/assistant
conductor for Boston Lyric Opera, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Orlando Opera Company, Central City Opera and the Kentucky
District Metropolitan Opera auditions. Mr. Penn also recently served as a vocal coach for the Kentucky Opera Young Artist
Program, Bellarmine College, Centre College, Boston Civic Symphony and Florida Symphony Orchestra. While pursuing a DMA
in Collaborative piano at New England Conservatory as a student of Margo Garrett, Mr. Penn was director of Opera Workshop
at NEC. Former positions include the Hart School in Hartford, Connecticut, The University of Connecticut at Storrs,
Boston Conservatory and the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria, where Mr. Penn was awarded a fellowship
for coaching studies.
This summer Mr. Penn will continue to serve as principal coach for the UK Summer Opera Workshop and will join the faculty
for the Kentucky Governor's School for the Arts. A native of Frankfort, Kentucky, Mr. Penn had the privilege of working
closely with Lucien Stark and Sara Holroyd as an undergraduate piano major at UK.
