Noemi Lugo was born in Caracas, Venezuela where she studied at the "Jose Angel Lamas" National Conservatory of Music,
receiving a Vocal Music Diploma. While in Venezuela, she performed with major orchestras and choral organizations, soloing
throughout the country and Europe. She performed with the "Opera Metropolitana de Caracas" and "Opera Teresa Carreno."
In 1977 the Venezuelan government awarded here a Scholarship to pursue her studies at the University of Wisconsin, Madison,
where she earned a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance. Her professional engagements there included the Madison Civic
Opera, the Madison Symphony, and the University of Wisconsin Opera and Symphony.
She holds a Master of Music from the University of Utah and a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Performance and Pedagogy from
the University of Colorado, Boulder, where she studied with the late Barbara Doscher.
She is an Associate Professor at the University of Kentucky. She remains active as a recitalist, and has been featured as
soloist with the University of Kentucky Percussion Ensemble, Wind Ensemble, University Symphony, and the Lexington Philharmonic.
In 2000 the Lexington Arts and Cultural Council awarded her a grant to implement a project with the local P.L. Dunbar High
School, "The Latin American Music Project." In 2001 the UK College of Fine Arts awarded her a travel grant to research
Cuban composers in La Habana, Cuba. Throughout her career she has been devoted to the Art Song recital. As one critic
from the Salt Lake City Deseret News said, "Noemi Lugo is a heart-and-soul recitalist." She has presented recitals and
lecture recitals on Spanish and Latin American Music in Ohio, Colorado, Idaho, Arkansas, Georgia, Iowa, Texas, Utah,
Puerto Rico, and Germany.
Currently she is working on an anthology of vocal music by Venezuelan composers, and is the Director of Latin American
Studies at the University of Kentucky.
