Tedrin's Commentary on the Spring 2012 Lecture Series
This semester we will continue to explore musical stage works based on Shakespearean plays.
Just in time for UKOT’s performances of Verdi’s Falstaff, we will begin with an exploration of that work, followed by a study of the Italian master’s other great Shakespearean opera, Otello. After allowing for a month of March madness, we will resume with a class about two other lesser-known operas by Nicolai and Rossini based on the characters of Falstaff and Othello, then examine Verdi’s early Bard-inspired opera (and my personal favorite of his three), Macbeth.
We will continue with two French operas, Berlioz’ adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing and Thomas’ sentimentalized Hamlet. We will end the semester in such a way as to get in the mood for Grand Night, by studying two great musical comedies by Rodgers & Hart and Cole Porter from the Golden Age of Broadway, based on The Comedy of Errors and The Taming of the Shrew.
Don’t miss a note!
