Who We Are…
OperaLex, formerly the Lexington Opera Society, is a private, not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting and promoting opera in the Bluegrass. The organization consists of a Board of Directors and an active membership group known as the Bravo Guild.
Why We Exist…
- Advocacy: We want to preserve and promote one of the oldest traditions in America – storytelling. For us, opera is the art of storytelling with fine singing, music and theater.
- Aspirations: We love helping young people achieve their dreams. OperaLex and UK Opera Theatre (UKOT) have been proud ‘Town and Gown’ partners for over 17 years. We support UKOT’s students with scholarships along with volunteers and funding for their world-class productions.
- Outreach and Education: We support UKOT’s students as they travel our state to perform in over 37 counties, inspiring over 37,000 school children with their musical storytelling.
What We Do…
OperaLex hosts ‘The Soiree of the Spring Season’ called Encore! This annual fund-raising event, Lexington’s most elegant tasting evening, attracts a wide variety of party-goers for whom opera is a passion or a novelty.
OperaLex supports the Schmidt Opera Outreach Program (SOOP), a program featuring performances by UK Opera students who visit schools across the Commonwealth.
OperaLex hosts the popular Metropolitan Opera National Council District Auditions each Fall. These regional events attract the most talented young singers who compete for a place with the stars of the opera world.
OperaLex publishes a newsletter three times each year. The newsletter highlights upcoming events and provides some “behind the scenes” articles related to the UK Opera Theatre and opera in the Bluegrass.
OperaLex sponsors the Opera Lecture Series, taught by Dr. Tedrin Blair Lindsay, for two hours on Saturday mornings during the school year.
